Stress

STRESS SCAN

Check for signs of tension in each area:

  • HEAD --jaw, tongue, mouth, eyes, forehead, pressure/tension?
  • NECK -- braced ? Out of balance?
  • SHOULDERS, BACK, CHEST -- rigid/tense, rapid heart rate?
  • BREATHING -- high, fast, uneven, stopped?
  • STOMACH -- tense muscles, bowel upsets, gut discomfort?
  • HANDS -- cold, clammy?
  • FEET, ARMS THIGHS -- clenched, achy?
  • THOUGHTS -- fear, anxiety, worry, guilt, resentment ....?

Signs of effective relaxation

  • nose breathing, slow & flowing
  • heart rate slower, less noticeable
  • hands & feet warmer & drier
  • head cooler, less pressure
  • muscles & joints looser, move with ease
  • shoulders dropped, relaxed, in a natural position
  • jaw unclenched
  • thinking clearer, better concentration, optimism at last

Check regularly for signs of tension or changes in breathing --
on the hour -- every hour. And forget about it in between !!!

At B R E A T H I N G WORKS we've had the annual influx of people coming in for a New Year Warrant of fitness. They want to make sure their breathing is tip top. They also want to polish up relaxation methods to integrate into their working day to reduce stress levels and calm busy brains.

We've also seen the annual victims of bad experiences of P or E at parties and summer gigs. (check www.fast-times.co.nz)

A herbal (legal) equivalent sent one poor woman to A&E with a racing heart and acute hyperventilation. So not even natural products are safe in many cases. Chronic hyperventilation soon followed this nasty experience . . .

We would also like to pay our tributes to Janet Frame. Her remarkable gifts of expression and illuminating use of language through her novels and poetry have affected many people and is spite of her death will continue to do so. The film 'Angel at My Table' made the extraordinary story of her life accessible to people worldwide. We loved her reasons for choosing not to drive a car. The language of driving was too violent -- clutch, choke, brake and throttle!!
Her wit and penetrating observations will be missed by many both in New Zealander and the wider world.

We'd love to hear from you if you have comments or experiences to share.

Remember our well known B R E A T H I N G WORKS motto --

'Breathe Well to Be Well'
