BREATHE WELL (with your fingers crossed) FOR THE RUGBY!
What an exhilarating time it is around New Zealand at the moment with the Rugby World Cup dominating the airwaves and newspapers right up until the grand final on October 23rd in Auckland.
Visitors from all parts of the world are livening up our towns and cities with national flags and colourful kit and sometimes, wonderful singing.
Here are some tips to help if your breathing gets out of hand!
- If you are watching a game on TV, remember to get and up move during the half time break - you need a break too!
- If you tend to hold your breath, unlock your jaw, do a few stretches, and relax those shoulders.
- If you tend to breathe fast and shallow, breathe and walk slowly in sync, to the kitchen, or the bathroom --or anywhere – just keep a gentle, unwinding pace.
- Remember you don't have to breathe perfectly all the time – we’ll all get excited with the fantastic games we are seeing - yes we will be sighing with frustration at the missed tries and holding our breath for the conversion kicks ... the key is good recovery.
- Lets hope our Men in Black have full recoveries too before the big games.
- If you were caught up in the crush on the opening day and felt panicky or anxious make sure you have completely recovered. If you are still feeling unsettled come in for a top up session to get your health back on track.
Many people assume that elite and top class athletes must be breathing correctly. At Breathing Works we have found this not to be the case. In any sport it is important to monitor breathing quality. Breathing rhythms, patterns and volumes change depending on the sport played. A good rhythmical mechanically efficient pattern can assist with endurance, technique and over all performance.
