COVID-19 started in December 2019, with cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China, and has spread to most of the world now. COVID-19 is a pandemic which is in a third wave globally, with a current “delta” variant causing further deaths and infections globally.  While many people do recover fully from acute COVID-19 infection there is a proportion of people who suffer severe sickness and death (1-2%) and a further group who do not recover from the respiratory illness (1).  Recent research indicates that around 10% of people infected with COVID-19 go on to develop a condition that has been named “Long COVID” or “post-COVID conditions” (1).  This condition is poorly understood and can be severely disabling (1,2).
